What changes at each stage
- Kitten (under 1). Growth food, vaccines, neutering around 4-6 months. Weight can triple between 2 and 6 months.
- Young adult (1-6). Adult food and a stable weight. The commonest health issue is weight gain after neutering -- calorie needs drop about 25%.
- Mature (7-10). Annual bloodwork becomes worthwhile; dental disease is near universal by now and worth addressing.
- Senior (11-14). Twice-yearly checks; kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and arthritis are common and all easier to manage early. Weight loss in a senior cat is a vet visit, not a diet success.
- Super senior (15+). Comfort and monitoring: litter box access, warmth, soft food if teeth are gone, and watching drinking and appetite closely.

How does cat age convert to human years?
The convention used by the AAFP and International Cat Care: the first year equals about 15 human years, the second adds 9 (so a 2-year-old cat is roughly 24), and each year after that adds 4. A 10-year-old cat is about 56 in human terms; a 15-year-old about 76.
Why doesn't cat size matter the way dog size does?
Domestic cats vary far less in size than dogs -- a Maine Coon is maybe twice a Singapura, where a Great Dane is twenty times a Chihuahua -- and their lifespans don't split by size the way dogs' do. One chart fits nearly all cats.
When is my cat a senior?
The feline life-stage guidelines call cats mature at 7-10, senior at 11-14, and super senior (geriatric) at 15+. Indoor cats routinely live to 15-18, so 'senior' is a care stage -- twice-yearly checkups, kidney and thyroid screening, weight monitoring -- not a countdown.
How can I tell a cat's age if I don't know it?
Teeth are the usual guide: all adult teeth by 6 months; light tartar by 1-2 years; noticeable tartar and wear by 3-5; heavy wear, gum recession and missing teeth in older cats. Eye clarity, coat condition and muscle tone add clues. A vet estimate is normally accurate to within a couple of years.
